Libido
Dictionary definition…
The psychic and emotional energy associated with instinctual biological drives.
A. Sexual desire.
B. Manifestation of the sexual drive.
Libido, like so many words associated with the sexual sphere, has a variety of meanings both popular and technical. It may be used as a synonym for the sexual drive. Various herbal remedies are advertised as the surest way to revive a flagging libido, however, they are believed by the FDA to be unsafe as clinical trials and studies, in many cases, have never been performed, and there is no evidence based upon medical study that libido is safely enhanced by taking such uncontrolled substances, so they are strongly recommended against.
Sigmund Freud (Libidinal Types, 1931) suggested that the direction of the adult libidinal urge fell into three broad categories, the most important of which is the ‘erotic’ type, swayed by the ‘elementary instinctual demands of the id’, was mainly interested in love, and being loved was more important than loving. Freud positioned the libido as the characteristic energy of the life instincts. A large number of psychological and physiological factors interact to determine an individual’s libido, or sex drive. It is often difficult, therefore, to pinpoint the cause for a loss of sexual desire. Nevertheless, a healthy diet and regular exercise can improve a person’s sex drive; overindulgence in food, alcohol, or exercise can reduce it.
Physical factors
During your appointment at Men’s Clinics of America, the state licensed physician by whom you will be examined will make a determination with you as to whether you are suffering from a low libido. He will consider physical factors that can affect libido, some of which include: endocrine issues such as hypothyroidism, the effect of certain prescription medications on your libido, various lifestyle factors. If his examination leads him to the belief that it is necessary, the physician will provide treatment and prescription for loss of or lowering of libido.
Treatment for loss of libido in men
More importantly, loss of sexual desire in middle age may be linked to lowered levels of sex hormones. This can be alleviated by testosterone treatment therapy in men. Reduced sex drive due to hormonal causes is widely believed to be increased by such things as boredom, domestic or job worries, and mental and physical fatigue. The following advice may help a person cope with the stresses of life and maintain a healthy libido:
• Avoid overindulgence in food or alcohol
• Eat a healthy, balanced diet
• Take regular (but not excessive) exercise
• Testosterone replacement therapy can greatly improve libido in as little as 4 weeks
